Why does people's ego get bigger after meditation and yoga?

Yes, it is true that after meditation sometimes some people's ego, not everyone's, increases and as a result, those persons and who so ever comes in their contact get confused about the utility of meditation. Therefore, the question is why does this happen?

It is so because of sanskara. Our sansksra is not a result of some days, months or years. It is a build up of several previous births. If one has a strong deep rooted negative sanskara carried over from previous births then that particular negative trait, be it anger, ego, fear, or whatever it may be, would emerge even stronger after meditation.

Now the question arises, should one not do meditation in such case? Answer does not lie in escaping rather in continuing with the practice of meditation.

Take an example of a old phial of liquid medicine, which was there in the corner for many years and had a little quantity of the liquid medicine still left in the bottom. One day you found it. Now, there is a need of something to put in it, and for that you have to clean the phial. You pour some water into the phial, shake it well, and turn it upside down to get the water out. What happens? You had poured in clean water, which was transparent. Now the water coming out of the phial is murkey, no more transparent. After two to three repetition of the process you would take a tiny pointed shaft to scrub the side walls and the bottom of the phial. Now the water that comes out is even more murkey. Then after some repetition of scrubbing and stirring with patience and pouring in and out clean water repeatedly, the phial would be cleaned. Now, if you pour clean water into the phial, the same clean water will come out. The similar is the case with cleansing the negativities. Here, the body is the phial. Sanskara of the previous births is the little left liquid. Pranayama is like the clean water. Meditation is like the pointed shaft.  As the phial took some repetitions of the cleansing process to get cleaned, and in the start of the process more murkey water was coming out, and after several patient repeated attempts it got cleaned finally; the same happens during the cleansing of the negativites.

The erruption of the negativity will last for some days, months, or a few years depending upon how much deep rooted is the negative trait as well as the sincerity in the practice of meditation. In such case of the eruption of the negavities as a result of the meditation, one should do practice even more sincerely. Such persons should do pranayama before meditation. People around him/her also should be caring. The surrounding of the person should be calm. That person should avoid bad company rather s/he should do self study (स्वाध्याय).
